In April, the Ed and Ruth Lehman Y was one of 90 organizations across the nation awarded a LIVESTRONG Community Impact Grant. As a grant recipient, the Longmont Y has received funding to conduct a 12-week "LIVESTRONG at the YMCA" cancer survivor program.

This research-based program is designed to help adult cancer survivors during the transitional period between completing cancer treatment and returning to "new normal." This incredible program perfectly aligns with the Longmont Y's mission to offer an empowering environment that helps cancer survivors reach their holistic health and life goals!

Watch this introductory LIVESTRONG at the YMCA video to learn more about the program. The stories contained within this 10-minute video are sure to touch your heart!

Planning for the implementation of LIVESTRONG at the Longmont Y is underway. We are looking forward to kicking off this life-changing program in September 2012 - only 4 months away!

Summer is the perfect time for active learning and exploration, but too often, kids' exposure to mentally and physically stimulating activities ends with the school year. To help battle this summertime slump, Ys across the nation celebrate "Healthy Kids Day!" This FREE annual event features fun activities and community resources, encouraging families to become healthier, happier, and better connected!

This year's nationwide event took place on Saturday, April 28th. The Longmont Y (and 1,900 YMCAs across the nation) showed local families new, exciting ways to keep their kiddos laughing, playing, and learning year round!

At the Longmont Y, festivities included exciting attractions for adults and kids alike. Families became acquainted with local wellness resources, took advantage of free family health checks, and snacked on healthy treats. Kids went crazy for our Big Wheel races, parachute games, balloon artists, and guest performers! Our interactive demonstrations were also a big hit. Kids, adults, and even CEO Tony Shockency took the stage to participate in energizing Zumba, dance, and jujitsu lessons!

Great strides have been made toward the completion of the Longmont Y's outdoor pavilion! The foundation has been poured, supports have been erected, and a roof has been built. Take a look for yourself! This beautiful structure, generously funded by the Boulder County Worthy Cause Fund, will someday serve as an "Open Air Classroom." The shady haven it provides will offer an ideal space to conduct Summer Camp activities, outdoor cooking classes, and other educational enterprises!

Last Wednesday morning, members entering the Longmont Y were greeted by an unexpected visitor - renown local artist Diane Wood! Stationed at a mobile studio in the Longmont Y's foyer, Diane captured the attention (and hearts) of many incoming members. Her medium of choice? Pastels. Her creations? Breathtaking!

Diane's public art demonstration was made possible by the Longmont Studio Tour Outreach (LSTO) program. This incredible initiative nurtures the relationship between local artists and the Longmont community through public demonstrations, workshops, and art displays. Thanks to LSTO, two additional artists will be visiting the Longmont Y to share their artistic talents:

Wednesday, May 16
10:00am - 12:00pm
Linda Sole Faul (Oil)

Wednesday, June 27
10:00am - 12:00pm
Nanci Imburgia (Needle Felting)

Bummed about missing Diane's demo? Don't be! Diane will return to the Longmont Y for a second live demonstration:

Wednesday, July 11
10:00am - 12:00pm
Diane Wood returns (Pastel)

You may also learn more about Diane Wood's artwork by visiting her website. Click here to learn more about the LSTO program and its talented artists!

Longmont Y Maintenance Director and resident bee-keeper Miles McGaughey recently called the Welcome Desk from sun splashed California to provide an exciting news update:

Miles is pleased to report that it is 75° and sunny in southern California. He will be returning to Colorado shortly with scores of bees in tow! Thanks to Miles' efforts, the Y will soon double its beehives, adding two hives to the duo already located in the Y's backyard.

Most people value bees for the delicious honey they produce. The Longmont Y's bees are certainly skilled at creating this sweet treat, as evidenced by the 1st place blue ribbon their honey merited at last summer's Boulder County Fair. However, bees also play a vital role in pollination, food production, maintaining plant communities, and ensuring production of seeds in most flowering plants! In fact, it has been said that bees are responsible for one of every three bites of food we consume!!!

This season, when you bite into a juicy tomato from the Y's Educational Farm or admire the bee-autiful blossoms in our growing orchard, remember these tiny pollinators and their caretaker, Miles McGaughey. These "busy bees" work hard all season long to provide delicious produce for our community to enjoy!

As the weather grows warmer, the Longmont Y is preparing for a third spectacular season in its Educational Farm (formerly known as the Community Garden)!

As the farm continues to grow and expand, so do our aspirations for positively impacting the nutrition, health, and happiness of our community! There are many exciting additions and expansions in store for the Educational Farm in 2012...

Much like the tender starter plants now taking root behind the Longmont Y, our Educational Farm is in its infancy.  Already we are making a difference in the Longmont community - providing local individuals and families with organically grown, affordable produce; feeding underprivileged community members by donating produce to the OUR Center; teaching our community about proper nutrition; and educating our children about nature, nutrition, and the joys of playing in the dirt!  Here at the Y, we are THRILLED by the positive impact our Educational Farm is having after only two seasons.  As we enter our third growing season, we look forward to a brighter future for both the Educational Farm and our community.

Take a look at this beautiful artist's illustration depicting what the Educational Farm may look like some day!

Rome wasn't built in a day and the Longmont Y's Educational Farm will require many seasons of careful planning, construction, and community support before reaching completion.  Join our movement toward a healthier, happier community by donating, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about the Educational Farm!

If you are interested in volunteering on the Longmont Y's Educational Farm, contact Farm Coordinator Jessica Fernandez at 720-652-4726. Volunteers are invited to participate in "Farm Work Days" from 8:00am - 12:00pm on 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month. We're not just growing a garden, orchard, or farm... We're growing a happier, healthier community!

The Longmont Y's Educational Farm also houses bee hives! Two active hives are currently up and buzzing. Another two hives will be added after resident beekeeper Miles McGaughey returns from California. Did you know that our honey was the Blue-Ribbon Winner at the Boulder County Fair this past Summer?!

Pictured above - Miles McGaughey inspects a frame from one of the Longmont Y's beehives!

In addition to fruits, veggies, and bumbling bees, the Y's Educational Farm will soon become home to 4 egg-laying chickens! Our feathered friends will be housed in a moveable coop (aka chicken tractor), providing natural fertilizer for soon-to-be planting ground. The chicks are being fostered by a family in Berthoud and will be donated within the month.

If you are interested in volunteering on the Longmont Y's Educational Farm, contact Farm Coordinator Jessica Fernandez at 720-652-4726. As the farm continues to grow and expand, so do our aspirations for positively impacting the nutrition, health, and happiness of our community! There are many exciting additions and expansions in store for the Educational Farm in 2012...

Newly appointed Farm Coordinator Jessica Fernandez is busy organizing a smorgasbord of produce plots - tomatoes, onions, carrots, pumpkins, peppers, and more! Last year, the Longmont Y grew over 1,500 plants. This year our farm will nearly triple in size and will include numerous new plants - beets, squash, corn, and sunflowers, just to name a few. Did you know the Longmont Y donated over 200 lbs. of tomatoes to the OUR Center during the 2011 growing season!? In addition to row crops, the Longmont Y will designate educational plots for the Full Day Preschool, El Comite, and other community service organizations. Ultimately, an automated irrigation system will be installed, ensuring that our crops are well watered and thriving.

What's more, additional trees will soon be added to our already blossoming orchard. Thus far, six individuals have generously sponsored trees. Our ultimate goal is to have a thriving orchard of 50 or more! The shade these trees provide will create a perfect area for picnics and playtime.

Pictured above - Farm Coordinator Jessica Fernandez's initial plans for the Educational Farm's organization.

You may have noticed the concrete truck on the north side of the Longmont Y's property. What is going on you ask? A new pavilion is being constructed with funds generously provided by the Boulder County Worthy Cause Fund! When complete, this structure will serve as an "Open Air Classroom," housing Summer Camp activities, outdoor cooking classes, and other educational enterprises.

Pictured above - Dan and Mark, our dynamic construction duo, prepare to pour the pavilion's concrete foundation!
In addition to the pavilion, the Longmont Y will soon construct a greenhouse! This addition will enable us to grow "starts," nurturing seedlings throughout winter as we prepare for the 2013 growing season.

Get Out and Enjoy: McIntosh Lake

From Live Well Longmont:

Stroll, jog, canoe, kayak, paddle boat. Marvel at the stunning, mountainous panorama stretching out along the horizon. Or, simply enjoy the serenity of the quiet, rippling water. All this is at our fingertips, at McIntosh Lake.

Located south of State Highway 66, north of Hygiene Road, McIntosh Lake was originally called Dawson Lake, after John Dawson (1839-1917), who joined the Chicago-Colorado Colony in 1871, and farmed east of Hygiene. It was later renamed for pioneer George R. McIntosh, who came to the Front Range seeking health and wealth. McIntosh hoped the mountain air would improve his asthma.

In 1878, McIntosh built the lakeside Victorian frame farmhouse off Highway 66 to accommodate a growing family. Today the peaceful water, surrounded by trail and fed from the St. Vrain Creek by a series of ditches, provides a perfect venue for walks, runs, family picnics, boating and more.

In addition to splendid views of the Front Range, including Mt. Meeker and Longs Peak, the reservoir and its surrounding environment is habitat to a wide range of wildlife species. The lake is also flanked by two public parks, located along the eastern edge:

Dawson, and Flanders. Both parks have restroom, picnic, and playground facilities.

April is a big month for Lake McIntosh, with the annual Mud Hen 5K being a unique draw for Longmont's active community. "The Mud Hen is special because of its simplicity," says Suellen Dabney, organizer of the event for the 3rd time this year. "There are no streets, so it's a great race for youngsters and individuals who do not want to mess with car traffic. It also provides beautiful, unobstructed views, plus a chance for families to enjoy the Lake and scenery together." Dabney says that, due to the unpredictable nature of Colorado's weather, race wear is typically a last-minute decision. But one thing is certain, whether wet, rainy, snowy, bright, or blustery weather, the Mud Hen is fun. If you haven't already, register today!

Parent's Night Out - "Spring Break Beach Party!"

Kids had a beach-tastic time during last Saturday's Parent's Night Out "Spring Break Beach Party!" Attendees participated in "wipe out" freeze dancing, musical beach towels, beach ball bowling, shell painting, and more! With colorful beach balls on hand, towels around their shoulders, and surf rock on the stereo, some might say the only ingredient missing from kids' Spring Break experience was ocean waves lapping upon the beach. Then again... a number of kids swore they heard the ocean through their painted seashells!

On Sunday, while working at the Welcome Desk, I noticed a duck lounging outside the Longmont Y's main entryway. Unafraid of incoming members, this tenacious Mallard wandered amidst the bushes and bike racks, occasionally stopping to peer inside the front doors. Members informed me that her mate, a green-headed drake, was meandering toward the Educational Farm. Waddling lazily and soaking up the springtime sun... What a life!

Between March 7th and 23rd, the Longmont Y participated in a nationwide voting frenzy! From Alaska to Florida, Y's across the nation conducted online voting campaigns in hopes of earning LIVESTRONG Community Impact Grants. These Community Impact Grants will fund 12-week Cancer Survivor Programs designed to help adult cancer survivors during the transitional period between completing cancer treatment and returning to "new normal." More than 450,000 votes were cast to bring cancer support programs to communities across the country!

A resounding THANK YOU to those who voted for the Longmont Y to receive a LIVESTRONG Community Impact Grant! Thanks to you, Longmont and its surrounding communities have an opportunity to help cancer survivors live with courage, dignity, and strength.

The Ed and Ruth Lehman YMCA was the only Y in Colorado to qualify for the LIVESTRONG Community Impact Grant. In order to secure the LIVESTRONG grant, the Longmont Y must receive more votes than its regional competitors in Texas and Montana.

Stay tuned and find out whether the Longmont Y will host LIVESTRONG's Cancer Survivor Program!

Grant recipients will be announced Monday, April 9th.
