Become a Leader... Become a Mentor... Become a Coach!
Looking for a fun way to positively impact youths in your community? Become a coach! With spring sports registration underway, the Longmont Y needs coaches for soccer and lacrosse "catch and cradle." Have fun while making a difference in the lives of kids age 4 through 6th grade! Coaches conduct weekly practices, oversee matches/scrimmages, and teach team members the rules of the game. However, coaches' positive influence extends far beyond athletics. Just ask Francisco Sandoval, longtime coach at the Longmont Y:
"Coaches are role models, teachers, and mentors. The lessons coaches teach can follow kids for the rest of their lives."
Francisco became involved with the Longmont Y's youth sports program at age 16. Since then, Francisco has returned to coach for four seasons! What keeps him coming back for more? Francisco explained, "I am yet to find anything that gives me the good feeling of coaching a team. I'm not easily excited, but when one of my kids scores a goal or completes an awesome pass, I find myself jumping up and down on the sidelines. These kids are great!"
Fun, excitement, and feelings of fulfillment ... just three of many reasons to become a Longmont Y coach! When asked what inspired him to begin coaching, Francisco replied, " I wanted to make a difference in the lives of kids. Growing up, I learned important lessons from my coaches and teammates. It feels great passing on the knowledge, skills, and values I've learned over the years." What's more, Francisco is a sports enthusiast who enjoys playing and watching soccer. Coaching, Francisco says, is yet another way to express his passion for the game!
"At the end of soccer season, a player named Jose invited me to his birthday party. While at the party, surrounded by his family and friends, I asked Jose what he wanted to do when he grew up. He said he wanted to be like me and coach a soccer team. From there, it became more real; the impact I had on these kids."
Francisco has witness first-hand how coaches positively influence kids' lives. You can too!
