Eric BergesonDear Friends:

On behalf of the Board of Directors for the Ed and Ruth Lehman YMCA, I am pleased to report that our Y has enjoyed another very successful year and that our Y is very healthy – financially and otherwise. I can point to several measures that demonstrate this success: stable and predictable financials; a new high for the annual fundraising campaign; significantly higher membership visits; expanded programming; and strengthening of the management team. However, it is in the most critical area, supported by all these measures, in which our Y has absolutely shined during the past year: executing on the mission.

The Y has a long-standing mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Last year the Y movement provided more definition to this mission by focusing in three distinct areas: socially responsible community leadership, promoting the overall health of individuals and families, and developing the youth of our communities. Through the leadership and direction of the Board of Directors, our CEO Tony Shockency, and the hard work of his team, our Y has made the right adjustments to ensure weare serving our community according to our mission.

A significant component of these changes is connecting, in a meaningful way, with the immediate community in which our Y is positioned. In this way, Tony and his team are best able to serve the needs of the community surrounding our Y. The groundwork laid during the past year is enabling our Y to positively impact health outcomes and to develop youth in Longmont where the need is greatest. The Board of Directors is proud of the results being delivered by our Y; and the national Y organization is consistently spotlighting our Y as a shining example of what the local community driven Y movement is all about. Thank you for being a part of our Y and our mission.

Sincerely,
Eric Bergeson

  • Our Y piloted a new program funded by Kraft and Y-USA dedicated to supporting Hispanic/Latino families in achieving healthy lives. We received additional funding from Kraft to extend the program called Salsa, Sabor y Salud throughout 2011.
  • More than 100 people referred by Salud Clinic were able to take steps to manage – and even conquer – chronic disease through Activate for Life, a new program funded by the Colorado Health Foundation.
  • In 2010, more than 400 individuals and companies gave $102,000 to fund scholarships for low income children, families and adults. Local and national foundations provided grants totaling over $157,000 to support our work to improve our community’s health and well being.
  • What do 439 bikes and 610 new books add up to? Thousands of smiles and lots of holiday cheer. Bicycle Longmont and the Y partnered to put on the annual Y Pals party for needy kids.
  • In 2010, 742 volunteers gave 6751 hours! Whether it’s coaching a soccer team or landscaping or wrapping books for Y Pals, it’s all part of belonging to the Y.
  • The Y partnered with local non profits El Comite and Intercambio de Comunidades to hold classes for the community in citizenship, diabetes prevention, know your rights, Latin dance and English as a second language.
  • 100% of children in the Y preschools transitioning to kindergarten were assessed as “ready to start.”
  • Every child attending preschool, after school and summer camp took the Health Smart Behaviors assessment, and learned about healthy diets and activities as part of a Y USA pilot program.
  • The SilverSneakers program for older adults at the Longmont Y is one of the largest in Colorado. More than 1500 people enrolled and enjoyed a full Y membership as well.
