At the YMCA, we realize that age does not necessarily dictate fitness level or interest. Therefore, we offer a variety of classes to meet the unique needs of all our senior members. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Jeannie Heiman, Senior FItness Advisor, at 720-652-4738.


Free Fitness Classes

The following complimentary classes are FREE and require no registration for members.

*SilverSneakers — Yoga (low)
Introducing a gentle yoga style class just for you! Includes relaxation and stretching exercises that can be performed from a seated or standing position.

Location: Meeker Room
M T Th 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

*SilverSneakers — Introduction to Muscular Strength and Range of Motion (low)
A great way to get started for beginning exercisers, or the place to stay if you prefer a smaller classroom setting. This class introduces participants to exercises that will increase upper and lower body strength and range of motion. A chair is provided for seated and/or standing support.
Location: Meeker Room
M T Th 10:45 – 11:30 a.m.

*SilverSneakers — Muscular Strength and Range of Motion (low)
This class includes exercises for the upper and lower body that will improve strength, range of movement, and activities of daily living. A chair is provided for seated and/or standing support.
Location: South Gym
T Th 10:45 – 11:30 a.m.

* SilverSneakers® – Cardio Circuit (low-med)
This total body conditioning class offers a blend of basic standing exercise designed to increase cardiovascular and muscle strength and endurance. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is provided for support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

MWF 10:45 – 11:30 a.m.

* Fit Over 50 (med)
Cardiovascular, muscle strength and flexibility exercises are the focus of this exercise class. Intermediate to advanced fitness levels.
Location: South Gym
T TH 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. (strength and balance)

* NEW! Fitness for Everyone (low-med)
Learn a variety of cardio and toning exercises in this fun class. Mat exercises will also be included. Beginners are welcome! This is the "Fit Over 50" class that is more inclusive for all exercisers.

M W F 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

* YMCA/SilverSplash (low)
Join us in the pool for a variety of exercises that can help you build strength and increase your range of movement. A SilverSneakers® kickboard is provided for balance and support and you don't even need swimming skills. All members are welcome!
W F 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Sa 8:15 – 9:00 a.m.

*Senior Water Walking (low)
The use of aqua-belts lets you get a great workout without the impact on the joints.
Location: Pool
TTh 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.

* Surfs Up (low-med)
A toning and cardio training class guaranteed to make you feel great. Appropriate for all levels.
T Th 6:30 - 7:30 a.m.

* High Tide (med)
In intermediate class with 30-40 minute intermediate class with cardio and toning segments.
M W F 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.

Senior Functional Fitness Assessments
*Check your strength, flexibility and balance. Testing dates will be posted on the Senior Bulletin Board in the South Gym. Contact Jeannie Heiman at 720-652-4738 for more information. Free for all YMCA Senior members.

 

Exercise Alternatives

The following programs and events are provided as a complimentary service to our YMCA and SilverSneakers members. Members are encouraged to drop-in and try any class or event. Nonmembers are welcome to attend by first checking in at the front desk and paying the day fee.

NEW! AARP Driver Safety Class (low)
The class to take to keep you fresh and alert on the road. Max Fuller is an experienced instructor who does a great job of making the class fun and interesting. Class is free but there is a $10 materials fee which should be paid to instructor on first day. Must attend both days.

Monthly Nutrition Workshops
Kelly Leonard, MS, R.D. will conduct a free workshop each month. No registration or fee is required for members. There is a $10 fee for guests.

Specialty Fitness Classes

The following list includes some of the specialty fitness classes that are recommended for seniors. These classes run for 6-week sessions and require a registration and a fee.

Restorative Yoga (low)
A gentle yoga class perfect for beginners, seniors, and pre/post natal.
Location: Longs Peak Room
M 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Member Fee: $30.00

Pilates (low-med)
A unique combination of floor based stretching and strengthening exercises. Flowing movements help improve posture, increased freedom of movement, and reduce physical tension. Great for beginners, seasoned exercisers, or athletes.

Location: Long's Peak Room
M 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
Th 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Sa 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.

Member Fee: $30.00

Tai Chi (low)
T'ai Chi Ch'uan is an ancient Chinese martial art that combines fluid movements of the upper and lower body to produce a subtle and powerful full-body exercise. Regular practice of T’ai Chi Ch’uan allows you to develop coordination, strength and flexibility, reduce stress and promote inner strength. Beginners are welcome. Instructor is trained in T'ai Chi Ch'uan, 24 Form Yang Style.
Location: Long's Peak Room
T 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Member Fee: $30.00

Chi Kung (low)
Chi Kung involves meditation, movement and visualization to develop focus and balance.

Location: Long's Peak Room
Th 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.
